HKUST offers email lists for group communication. A list may be requested by student, faculty or staff member. You can subscribe to and unsubscribe from lists, manage your existing subscription preferences, view and search archives, and perform other functions relating to mailing lists at HKUST. There are also system mailing lists for teaching courses and various University administration purposes where the list membership is maintained by system and restricted to change by individuals.
A new Mailing Lists Server based on Sympa has been launched since September 2013. Sympa is an open source Mailing Lists Manager. It provides advanced features with a rich and secure web interface such as:
- Discussion lists allow any list member to post to the list.
- Announcement lists restrict postings to designated persons only.
- Members may easily unsubscribe themselves.
- List owners can change list settings.
- Manage Bouncing list members
- Optional archive of postings.
Please note that Mailing Lists (Legacy System) will be retired on 15 Jan 2014 and the mailing lists there will need to migrate to the new Mailing Lists Manager before the date. All new application of mailing lists will be created on the new system. New list will need to have least one hyphen (-) character within the list name to distinguish the email address as a list, and suffixed by @lists.ust.hk, e.g. email@example.com.
After signed in the Mailing Lists Manager, you can apply for mailing lists based on the following templates depending on your requirement:
- For Discussion
- All members could send to the list
- User could subscribe/unsubscribe to the list
- For Information and Announcements
- Only authorized senders could send to the list
- Only list owners could manage the subscription
- User could not subscribe/unsubscribe to the list
You shall receive email notification the next working day if your application is approved. Please refer to the Beginner’s Guide if you are new to the mailing list system:
After the list created, you can always edit the list settings and manage subscribers. Just log into the Mailing Lists Manager and select the button next to your list on left of the screen. Most of the settings including subject of the list, visibility of the list, who can sent messages, who can subscribe to the list, who can unsubscribe, etc. are configurable.
